1. Background

Poultry farming is a growing sector in Rwanda, contributing significantly to food security, employment, and income generation. With rising urban demand for eggs and poultry meat, the sector offers strong investment potential. Tanganyika Byashara Ltd seeks to establish a model poultry farm to raise 50,000 layer hens and 50,000 broilers to meet this growing demand, improve food self-sufficiency, and create local employment opportunities.

2. Project Objectives

  • Primary Objective:
    To establish and operate a large-scale, integrated poultry farm producing table eggs and broiler meat for the Rwandan and regional markets.

  • Specific Objectives:

    • Raise 50,000 layer hens for egg production, targeting a daily output of 45,000+ eggs.

    • Raise 50,000 broilers per cycle for meat production, with a target of 6 production cycles annually.

    • Create over 100 direct jobs and numerous indirect opportunities in distribution, feed supply, and logistics.

    • Promote best practices in biosecurity, animal welfare, and environmental management.

    • Serve as a model for training and replication by other poultry entrepreneurs.

3. Project Components

  • Farm Infrastructure:
    Construction of poultry houses for layers and broilers, hatchery unit (optional), feed storage, water and power systems, and staff quarters.

  • Production Systems:

    • Layers: Cage system or deep litter housing, automated feeding, and egg collection.

    • Broilers: Deep litter housing with ventilation and controlled temperature.

    • Feed Management: On-site feed mixing to reduce costs and ensure quality.

  • Biosecurity & Veterinary Care:
    Routine vaccination, veterinary support, and strict access control to prevent disease outbreaks.

  • Marketing & Distribution:
    Eggs and meat sold to supermarkets, retailers, institutional buyers, and through branded outlets or partnerships with delivery platforms.

4. Location and Land

The farm will be located in a rural area with access to water, electricity, and major roads, ideally within 100 km of Kigali for easy market access.
